The term cognitive dissonance is used to describe the mental discomfort that results from holding two conflicting beliefs, values, or attitudes. People tend to seek consistency in their and , so this conflict causes feelings of unease or discomfort.
This inconsistency between what people believe and how they behave motivates people to engage in actions that will help minimize feelings of discomfort. People attempt to relieve this tension in different ways, such as by rejecting, explaining away, or avoiding new information.
I would like you to discuss what cognitive dissonance is, including low/high dissonance, the free choice paradigm, and the induced compliance paradigm. I also would like to explain how people cope with dissonance in their lives. What are the factors that affect the magnitude of dissonance? I would like you to identify three situations (media, TV, etc.) where you recognize cognitive dissonance as well as share a time in your life when you have had cognitive dissonance.
