U.S History Essay

Instructor Requirements: Read Chapter 2, “Englands New World Experiments 16071732,” Chapter 3, “Putting Down Roots: Opportunity and Oppression in Colonial Society 16191692,” and write an essay in response to the prompt.
English settlers coming to North America during the seventeenth century brought with them ideas and assumptions that helped them make sense of their everyday experiences in an unfamiliar environment. Settlement was a complex process of adjustment that led to the development of different subcultures and regional identities in America resulting in the emergence of distinct societies in the Chesapeake, New England, Middle, and Southern colonies. By the late 1600s, however, cultural convergence caused by common language and religion in these regions pulled English American settlers together and set the foundations for the establishment of an English empire in North America based largely on economic factors.
After reading Chapter 3, “Putting Down Roots: Opportunity and Oppression in Colonial Society 16191692,” consider how the cultural convergence resulting in the English colonies during the late 1600s led to the establishment of an English empire in North America which was based largely on economic factors such as property ownership, sources of human labor, and the expansion and regulation of colonial trade.
Write an essay in which you explain how various geographic and cultural factors led to the development of distinct identities in the Chesapeake, New England, Middle, and Southern colonies during the seventeenth century and analyze how these regions eventually became the foundation for an English empire in North America by the end of that century based largely on factors such as property ownership, sources of human labor, and the expansion and regulation of colonial trade. Use historical evidence in your essay to support your ideas.
