Breakout Discussion
Dr. Young Juhn, a Professor of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, shares results of his study appearing in the May 2016 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where he describes an assessment tool (HOUSES) developed to measure the effect of socioeconomic status in a mixed population on health outcomes on five major diseases. He found that although disparities in the assessed health outcomes affect people with all ethnic backgrounds, populations with lower socioeconomic status are most vulnerable.

Each student in live session will present a four-minute critical analysis of your scholarly research article on Health care disparities. The following questions represent the type of information you might want to cover as part of your analysis:

What was your reaction to the article?
What limitations, if any, were present in the research (e.g., low response rates)?
Was the sampling technique/size used effective for this study?
Were there any obvious biases?

As an FNP in practice, what specific actions can you take to address these disparities?

Health care policy is the key to addressing many of the issues involved in disparities. How can an FNP be involved in health care policy that is important in examining and addressing these issues?
