Nosocomial or healthcare-associated infections are infections acquired in the process of receiving health care. These infections can occur in hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, or ambulatory settings (Sikora, 2021).
Address the following criteria in your main response to this week’s discussion:
For this week’s discussion, you will research and find a pathogen responsible for a common nosocomial infection (See the article below or Table 12.8 in the Microbiology for the Healthcare Professional textbook for a list of common pathogens related to nosocomial infections).
Sikora A, Zahra F. (2021, February 10). Nosocomial Infections. In: StatPearls. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK559312/ (Links to an external site.)
Then, address the following scenario and questions:
A number of patients in your department are showing signs of infection with your selected pathogen. You have been appointed to get identify the pathogen causing the infection.
Which of the techniques described in Chapter 8 of your textbook could we use to identify the pathogen? Describe the process for isolation and identifying the pathogen.
Identify your selected pathogen, list the major characteristics of this pathogen, and the disease it causes. Include a discussion of the pathogen’s classification (i.e., fungus, bacteria, virus, helminth, etc.).
What steps will you take to control the spread of the pathogen? Describe at least one factor that needs to be considered before deciding on the most appropriate method of microbial control.
Please include any interesting information you may have found in your research.
Be sure to add at least one reference (using APA) which exemplifies where you learned about the material. This could be your e-text or another source. If you submit a video response, be sure to additional add a text response with your reference.
